Everyone is drawn to this sport for different reasons, however we have two main groups of members at Precision Combat Training.

• Noncompetitive: Those who want to get in better shape physically and mentally, while having a great time and learning about one of the fastest growing sports in the country today.
• Competitive: Those who are interested in testing their skills in competition: MMA, submission wrestling, boxing, or muay thai.

Everyone is welcome. We only require that you have the desire to improve and the will not to give up. We can and will help you succeed.

With a multi-year background in traditional boxing, John “Hurricane” Halverson began his mixed martial arts career in 2002 following a chance meeting with then, UFC Champion, Tito Ortiz. After competing on the local and regional circuit for four years while building a 15-4 record, Halverson gained national exposure and was signed to the superbowl of mixed martial arts, the UFC. He has also competed on HD Net Fights and fought all over the country. Taking a break from actively competing in 2009, Halverson now gives back to the sport by teaching people the disciplines of striking/kick boxing at Precision Combat Training.

We believe that everyone is capable of improvement. The skills we teach take discipline and a lot of patience. We teach you how to obtain both. The ICOR Boxing Club has three USA Boxing certified coaches and has trained boxers at a variety of different levels. Some boxers just box recreationally, some box for fitness, some compete at a local and state level and others compete at a national and international level. We have had many state, regional, national and even international champions. We train men, women, boys and girls of all ability levels. Activities done during training sessions vary on a day to day basis. Our boxers generally hit the bags, shadow box, jump rope, practice bag drills, participate in sparring drills and spar. Beginners are never forced to do anything they are uncomfortable with.

ICOR MMA was founded in 2009. Training facilities include over 500 square feet of mat space, and plenty of bag space as well. ICOR MMA trains men, women, boys and girls of all ability levels. It has had many state, regional, national and international champions and competitors in both the amateur and professional realm in MMA, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu.

Local fighting legend and submission expert Ronnie “Warfrog” Britt has joined the staff at Martial Arts America to teach Grappling; the techniques to be taugh include everything from the basics of positioning to submissions from those positions, along with mental and physical stratagems needed to be successful.

The “Warfrog” has had a lengthy fight career and has been a true inspiration to every person he has come in contact with. Spawning the careers of UFC veteran and MCC co-owner John “Hurricane” Halverson, WEC veteran and MCC champion Chris “Mad Dog” Mickle, and influencing countless others such as Josh Neer, Kevin Burns, Mikey Van Meer and too many others to name, Ronnie has become both a fighter and fan favorite. Known for quick submissions and a variety of holds, Ronnie has ended most of his fights in the first round using techniques from Sambo, Jiu Jitsu, Catch Wrestling and various other fighting styles.

In 1968, Alvino Pena made a commitment to intercity youth in the community. These were the kids that he saw out in the streets just looking for something to do. As time went on, for many kids the thing to do became getting involved in criminal activities and joining gangs. For many neighborhood youth, there parents couldn’t afford to send them to athletic camps or pay for costly equipment and fees that other sports required. So Coach Pena opened the Davenport Boxing Club. Alvino Pena gave these kids something positive to do. With the reputation for being hard nosed and softhearted Alvino Pena became the dad and only caring male for many youth in the Quad Cities. Utilizing boxing as he magnet, Alvino Pena drew so many youth to the gym and taught them things like self-respect, hard work, and discipline. Working two jobs to support his club, Coach Pena completely funded the Davenport Boxing Club, a free not for profit gym. It wasn’t until the mid-eighties that the Davenport Boxing Club earned its official Non-Profit Tax Exempt Status.

Thirty-five years later, his youth have went on to capture professional world titles, an Olympic Silver medal, countless national, regional, and state titles. Coach Pena has been the coach for several U.S. amateur boxing teams, working with famous team members such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Oscar De La Hoya to just name a few. In 1999, Coach Alvino Pena was inducted to the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame. Again in 2003, he was inducted into the Quad City Sports Hall of Fame. To him though, all of these accomplishments are meaningless. What has meant most to him, is the positive impact that his club has made in the lives of thousands of youth from the Quad City area.

Unlike most other martial arts, a distinct advantage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that it allows the participants to train together safely, in real time. This provides a much more realistic and practical self-defense exercise, which develops a great sense of trust among participants. The training atmosphere is therefore very friendly and strong relationships develop among members.

Above all, BJJ is a practical form of self-defense, which allows you successfully to defend yourself against a much larger or stronger opponent. By using an attacker’s size, strength, and momentum to your advantage, aggression can be overcome. Because the techniques do not require strength or size to execute Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is successfully practiced by men, women, and children alike.

The benefits of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are vast and profound. In addition to improving flexibility, strength, coordination, and reaction time, jiu-jitsu will instill a level of self-confidence that is life changing. Consistent training in this art will improve strength of character and help develop the coveted virtue of, what Brazilians call, the ‘indomitable spirit’.
