Unlike most MMA classes in which cage fighting confines are the basis, this class is designed to appeal to a wider range of users by delving deeper into more real world self-defense strategies, such as offsetting a weight disadvantage, defending against multiple opponents, and disarming an attacker. Practitioners will train mental strengthening techniques helping to improve areas such as overcoming fear, improving focus, controlling emotions and much more. It is a group think oriented class, in which practitioners of many different martial arts come together to aid one another in the achievement of peaceful enlightenment and personal strength.

Jujutsu is not merely a combination of Karate, Judo and Aikido, but is actually the art from which Judo and Aikido were born. Many of the techniques and principles found in these arts, are also found in Jujutsu. Also, many of the striking techniques that are found in Karate, are also found in Jujutsu.

Chief Instructor Robert Carver began his Martial Arts training at the age of 10 under Sensei Curtis Hale in the art of Judo and Ju-Jitsu. Only a few years later he began his study of Shihan-Ryu Karate under Sensei Bruce R. Bethers. Robert competed in both Karate and Judo tournaments in the 1970s, and was several times the Oklahoma State Judo Champion. Robert was the Oklahoma State AAU Junior Olympic Champion in 1975, 1976, and 1977 and the AAU Regional Champion in 1976 and 1977. Robert competed at the AAU Nationals in 1977 where he placed third. Robert was subsequently named the Oklahoma AAU Athlete of the Year in Judo for 1977. Robert was promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt in Judo, Karate and Jujutsu in 1979. He is also the former Vice President and the current Webmaster for the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation.

All Gracie Barra students have the dream of becoming a black belt. However, this is not an easy goal and a lot of consistency and dedication is required. To fulfill the promise of facilitating students’ learning, Gracie Barra Programs are structured logically to keep students motivated to learn, practice and perform.

A typical Gracie Barra student starts with an introductory class, where he or she will learn the overall self-defense strategy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and afterwards enroll in the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Program. After four (4) months of training and learning all the techniques comprising the Fundamental’s curriculum, the student will be recommended to join the Gracie Barra Advanced Program. With eight (8) months of training and experience, the student will have the maturity level and enough knowledge to enroll on the Gracie Barra Black Belt Program. It is in the Gracie Barra Black Belt Program where he or she will be exposed to all kinds of training dynamics, including MMA, BJJ No-Gi and high level BJJ-Gi, so that the student develops his or her own Jiu-Jitsu game, strategy and technique(s).

The Head Instructor at Gracie Barra of Slidell is Trey Howard. Trey started training with the Gracie Barra team in 2006 under Gracie Barra Black Belt Professor Rafael Ellwanger, head professor of Gracie Barra Northshore. Over the last 5 years Trey has had the opportunity to have been taught by two other world class Gracie Barra Black Belts, Alexandre “Dande” And Rodrogi “Digao” Queiroz Vilas Boas. Having the chance to learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from three different Black Belts has helped Trey learn different style’s of BJJ and different methods of teaching the art.
