Our program began in 2005 under the guidance of 2nd degree Pedro Sauer black belt Greg Nelson, owner and head instructor of Minnesota Martial Arts Academy. With careful attention to the details of the techniques, we continue to pass along Professor Sauer’s technical style of Jiu Jitsu to our students and continue to advance and refine our technique with frequent seminars with Greg Nelson and black belt instructor Ishmael Bentley.

Our training environment is safe and controlled because it is based on respect for our training partners and flowing from one technique to the next without relying on brute strength to overcome bad form. We train without ego so pride will not block our progress. All rank advancement testing for Apex Jiu Jitsu is done by black belt instructors Greg Nelson, Ishmael Bentley, or Professor Sauer. Students can expect to work hard and train consistently to earn belt promotion in the Pedro Sauer Gracie Jiu Jitsu Association.

Although the majority of our students will never compete, we have a very active competition team competing monthly in Mixed Martial Arts, Thai Boxing, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling tournaments. We also offer character development for children through our kids mixed martial arts karate program. Your children will learn Mixed Martial Arts, which is a mix of Thai Boxing, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Wrestling. Along with awesome self defense, they will learn how to become leaders, to speak in public, to set goals, self discipline, honor and integrity.

Even though we have a gym full of fighters, 95% of our students are just wanting to get in the best shape of their lives, while learning how to defend themselves in the most realistic setting, using what’s proven to work. Getting a fighters workout is exhilarating, relieves stress, and releases endorphins that flood your body with a sense of well being and accomplishment by just knowing you’re doing right by your body.

The objective is to promote and develop amateur boxing for the benefits of amateur boxers of all ages and abilities, in accordance with the standard under the rules prescribed by the United States of America Amateur Boxing Federation, Inc. (U.S.A./A.B.F.) and the local Boxing Committee. Our efforts have been phenomenal, with our boxers qualifying and competing and winning at national levels.

These virtues are instilled by the Club, coaches and board members in the training of the youth and in the boxing programs. There are no paid positions at the gym. Everyone is a volunteer. The Gym is operated under these strict principles.

getting in better overall shape or if you want to compete in sanctioned amateur boxing and kickboxing events, we can accommodate you.

Our instructors are experts in their particular art and the MMA coaches have authentic fighting experience. We borrow from the training methods and emulate the skill sets of UFC and Pride champions.

Ideally, we would like to take the Muay Thai of Anderson Silva and Ken Florian, the Kyokushin of GSP, the wrestling of Brock Lesnar, Matt Hughes, the Jiu Jitsu of the Gracies, and the boxing skills of Chuck Lidell and make the well rounded fighters of the future.

We will combine all these compartmentalized arts into one fighting system that is known as MMA(MIXED MARTIAL ARTS). Each individual art has strengths and weaknesses to it as they are adapted for combat in the cage. We will throw out the flaws of each individual sport and keep what is practical. We will teach boxers to defend the takedown, we will teach wrestlers to fight from their guard, we will train grapplers how to strike and how not to get hit.

Our gym venue is the perfect match for our cross-training oriented program. Group classes take place in a spacious matted area, with padded walls that provide extra safety and comfort to our students. An elevated, 30-foot MMA cage and numerous heavy bags provide the physical backbone to the Muay Thai program.
