Instructor Dana Taylor AKA “VoVo”, has trained under Rodrigo Vaghi since 1996 or ‘97? and holds his Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is a 16 year veteran of the Omaha Police Deparment, as a patrol officer, and is a former Army Infantry Officer with combat experience in the Middle East. VoVo has accumulated the following victories in national and international competition: 2X Bronze Medalist Pan Jiu Jitsu Championship 2010, 1st Place NAGA 2008, Silver Medalist Pan American Games, Gold Medalist Gracie Nationals,
Silver Medalist Gracie Nationals, Silver Medalist Rickson Internationals, 2x Gold Medalist Big D Nationals, Gold Medalist Arnold Classic.

Team Rodrigo Vaghi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- Omaha North is located at the Edmonson Youth Outreach at the Fontenelle Park Pavillion lower level.

LBC provides self-defense training, physical fitness training or weight loss training for individuals who are not interested in competition. Participants must be 8 years or older with no maximum age. LBC is located at the Air Park West Recreation Center‎.

Boxing is one of the few positive activities “at-risk” youth will engage in. As such, it is a secondary purpose of the DTBC to provide a structured environment for young men to participate in athletics at a very minimal cost to them, understand the value of physical fitness and competition and the sense of self-worth gained from positive competition. It is the desire of the DTBC to provide a positive activity for young men who would otherwise be spending time on the streets. The allure of boxing to many of these young men is the matching of their ability with that of a competitor and the opportunity to advance to greater levels of achievement.

The Downtown Boxing Club was established in 1978 by Kenneth Wingo considered the Grandfather of Boxing in its current location at in Omaha. Established as a way to develop amateur boxing as a sport in the city of Omaha, the Downtown Boxing Club serves young men and boys ages 10-30 regardless of race, religion, creed, national origin or ability to pay. The Downtown Boxing Club has produced numerous boxing champions throughout its existence including Golden Gloves Champions, Silver Gloves Champions, Midwest Champions, City Champions, and State Champions. Ray Basili and John Glatgakos came on board to the Downtown Boxing Club in 1985 and Incorporated it as a Non Profit Nebraska Corporation and helped it become self sufficient financially through State Approved Charitable Gaming.

The mission of the Downtown Boxing Club is to promote the development of amateur boxing in the city of Omaha as a safe, positive sport for young men; to enhance the necessary boxing skills of young men as they compete in actual tournaments on a local and national level, to promote the attitude of sportsmanship and fair play, and to encourage and educate amateur boxers of the value of physical fitness and good health habits.

Techniques from Boxing, Wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, Kick-Boxing, Judo and Jujitsu are all brought into the classroom. Techniques such as kicking, punching, joint manipulation, grappling and full fledge combat will be addressed and taught through effective and close physical training. How to attack will be fine-tuned, as well as how to defend against attacks. Grappling and ground fighting will be practiced regularly, along with locks focusing on wrists, elbows and arms to encourage submission of an opponent. Internal and external strength will be harnessed by the repetition of effective stances, learning how to flow with momentum of movements and the constant focus to learn more advanced techniques.

Advancement will be available every three months although many times you will need more then three months to master your level. You must first be able to show Instructor Mr. Ray that you are capable for advancement in order to earn the privilege to test for you next rank. There will be challenges for each person to overcome. They will confront your determination, skills and your ability to adapt. Through all the hard work, both physical and mental, your ability to overcome these challenges will mature your martial skills, and you will be well on your way to the path of the Martial Artist.

Our Academy teaches a system of Martial Arts known as Kempo in Japanese, or Chuan’Fa in Chinese. The Art of Kempo has a long and colorful history that originated in China and encompasses Hawaii, Japan and Okinawa. The word Kempo means “Fist Method”, or “The Way of the Fist”. The teachers of ancient China classified three categories of fighting: striking (chuan’fa), grappling (shuai jiao) and joint-locking (qin na). Although Kempo is named for one of these, we teach methods that deal with all three disciplines in order for students to be effective at defending themselves from many types of attack.

Sensei Shawn Steiner has been teaching Martial Arts in Omaha since 1997 and is a well-respected member of the community. His dedication to the success of his students is unparalleled and his passion for teaching is second to none. Sensei Steiner is directly involved in the daily operations and classes at the Academy.
