We provide scheduled group classes or private classes. Group classes are offered Monday thru Friday in the afternoons and evenings and Saturday mornings. Private classes are also available if you can’t make a group class or want more One-on-One training. Give us a call or stop by today!

Being a fighter is a lot tougher than it looks! But it’s not the fight that makes it tough. It’s all the days of preparation leading to that one moment. Fighters are expected to train at least 4-5 days a week, especially when a date is set for competition. The conditioning is hard. The workload is harder.

Head Instructor Dave Spero has been involved in Martial Arts for over 17 years. First enrolling in Karate at age 15, Dave progressed to Jeet Kun Do, and then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Dave is currently a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a Brown Belt in Mixed Martial Arts under Roger Woo. Dave has also has competed in several Mixed Martial Arts competitions as well as multiple medals in local grappling tournaments.

Sensei Carl Young is the founder of Beyond the Belt Martial Arts Center, and his nearly two decades of martial arts experience, passion for teaching, and commitment to his students have combined to make an exceptional martial arts academy. Well versed in a variety of skills including Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, catch wrestling, and Kempo karate, Carl is an exceptional martial artist. Yet anyone who knows Carl recognizes his true passion, which is in always looking for innovative ways to teach young people discipline, character, and wisdom through martial arts.

He is committed to personal ongoing training and the evolution of martial arts. This includes personally training with MMA fighters and improving his own skills in a variety of areas. Yet his greatest ability is in making modern martial arts accessible to kids, teenagers, and adults alike. Among other accolades, he was the 2006 and 2009 EFC Instructor of the Year, a prestigious award given only to instructors who have proven excellence in martial arts technique, and who have demonstrated their outstanding ability in instruction.

Sensei Matt Babine has been studying and teaching martial arts for over 20 years. He holds black belts in both Kempo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. He has been extremely fortunate to study under a number of superb teachers, including: Sensei Lou Hopkins, Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee; Master Seroj Bejanian, martial arts world champion and movie actor; Billy Blanks, winner of multiple karate world championships and founder of Tae Bo; Sifu Yao Li, founder of the Boston Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute; and, Grandmaster Robert LaMattina, nationally renowned pioneer of American Shaolin Kempo Karate and founder of the Tokyo Joe System.

Sensei Babine has competed in men’s heavyweight sparring on both a national and international level and is the winner of numerous national and world championships.

Tokyo Joe’s Studios of Self Defense currently offers classes for children, and classes in Sparring and Thai Kickboxing.
