Heroes Martial Arts was established in January 2009 to bring the grappling arts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling to downtown San Jose. Head instructor and owner Alan “Gumby” Marques is a black belt under the legendary Ralph Gracie and is co-founder of OTM, one of the world’s leading resources for MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling. Heroes Martial Arts was created so he could personally share his knowledge and passion for the grappling arts with the public in a more face to face environment.
Heroes Martial Arts has also attracted top talent and instruction in our judo program featuring Chuck Jefferson and our wrestling program featuring Scott Belzer. Our youth program is headed by Mike Strangis. Our instructors have years of experience and a love of teaching, and each were friends with Gumby for years before being recruited to Heroes Martial Arts.
At Heroes Martial Arts, we pride ourselves on providing a complete curriculum for the grappling arts. The environment is challenging but fair and we work to maximize the potential of each student. Visitors can expect a friendly, safe and clean environment with careful instruction and challenges abounding. We’re tough at Heroes Martial Arts, but you will have a real feeling of satisfaction after every class you’ve attended.
Our student roster comes from all walks of life, and we’re fortunate enough to already have a wide range of ages, talents and abilities already at Heroes Martial Arts. Whether you’ve never set foot on the mat before, or if you consider yourself a seasoned veteran, you will benefit from training at Heroes Martial Arts.
We have a beautiful 4700 square foot facility in downtown San Jose with nearly 1600 square feet of mat space. Our equipment is new and kept rigorously clean. The space is open, with a 20 foot vaulted ceilings and skylights and two industrial strength heaters to warm on cold days. Heroes Martial Arts also boasts a shower so you can clean up before heading back to work.
