Jiu-Jitsu Boise Academy in Boise, Idaho, is the Treasure Valley’s first and only facility dedicated solely to teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).  It is also the only affiliate school of Professor Alexandre Paiva (2007 Masters Middleweight World Champion) in the United States. The Boise academy prides itself on having a friendly and respectful atmosphere conducive to learning and having fun. Instructors explain and demonstrate every technique and break them down in an easy to understand manner.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using the appropriate amount of leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger attacker. BJJ has received a lot of attention in recent years due to its success in no holds barred type competition. Royce Gracie and his family revolutionized the martial arts community after his impressive victories against much bigger and athletic opponents in the UFC.

In keeping with the spirit of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Boise academy welcomes men and women interested in learning BJJ as a hobby, self-defense or competition. Please note, this is not MMA style Jiu-Jitsu and techniques will be performed wearing a Gi.

The head instructor, Mitch Coats, travels regularly to his professor’s academy in Brazil to continue his advancement and ensure he is teaching the latest techniques. To our knowledge, he is the only instructor in the Treasure Valley that has taken the time to return to where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu originated and stands alone in his dedication and respect for this innovative martial art. Mitch is personally invested in each of his students and wants to ensure they continue to advance and reach their personal goals in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
