Gracie Barra Slidell

At Gracie Barra Slidell, Louisiana, we strive to help students get the most out of their training. For students with consistency and dedication, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu becomes a life-style and students can readily enjoy all the benefits of the Jiu-Jitsu or the “Gentle Art”.¬†Working from the assumption that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu must be embraced as a lifelong journey, Master Carlos Gracie Jr. has designed an effective learning plan or program of study that allows for students to naturally progress from the white belt to the black belt.

All Gracie Barra students have the dream of becoming a black belt. However, this is not an easy goal and a lot of consistency and dedication is required. To fulfill the promise of facilitating students’ learning, Gracie Barra Programs are structured logically to keep students motivated to learn, practice and perform.

A typical Gracie Barra student starts with an introductory class, where he or she will learn the overall self-defense strategy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and afterwards enroll in the Gracie Barra Fundamentals Program. After four (4) months of training and learning all the techniques comprising the Fundamental’s curriculum, the student will be recommended to join the Gracie Barra Advanced Program. With eight (8) months of training and experience, the student will have the maturity level and enough knowledge to enroll on the Gracie Barra Black Belt Program. It is in the Gracie Barra Black Belt Program where he or she will be exposed to all kinds of training dynamics, including MMA, BJJ No-Gi and high level BJJ-Gi, so that the student develops his or her own Jiu-Jitsu game, strategy and technique(s).

The Head Instructor at Gracie Barra of Slidell is Trey Howard. Trey started training with the Gracie Barra team in 2006 under Gracie Barra Black Belt Professor Rafael Ellwanger, head professor of Gracie Barra Northshore. Over the last 5 years Trey has had the opportunity to have been taught by two other world class Gracie Barra Black Belts, Alexandre “Dande” And Rodrogi “Digao” Queiroz Vilas Boas. Having the chance to learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from three different Black Belts has helped Trey learn different style’s of BJJ and different methods of teaching the art. Please contact “Coach” Trey for more information on our Adult or Kids programs.

VERY CLEAN gym, great instructors. There were very concerned with making sure that they were the right gym for me. Not with just taking my money. Also they offer different programs based on your skill level. I was VERY impressed with their kids program and would recommend this gym to anyone looking to learn BJJ!

A great place to train. Matt and Trey are the most talented and empathic instructors I’ve ever met.As soon as you walk in you’re treated like family and not a number or just one more paying customer. And in class their instructions are very simple and easy to follow yet the training is top notch. Can’t wait to get down there full time.

The gym is kind of small which was initially a turn off. However, once I met the instructors and participated in class I have to say I was impressed. Very, Very, knowledgeable teachers, great training partners and unlike other gyms I have trained at in the past this one was actually clean!!! I would recommend Gracie United to anyone looking to learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or self defense!!

The very best B.J.J. training on/near the gulf coast. The coaches are very talented and know how to connect. The best instruction I’ve found overall (and I have visited almost every BJJ/MMA gym on the coast and as far north as Hattiesburg, MS) comes from the Gracie United coaches and Professors. ( They are no longer officially under Gracie Barra though they do maintain connections with GB and teach the same style.) The Gracie United team always, ALWAYS dominates in competition and that is because they’ve received the very best training. Not only will you find the best BJJ training in Slidell; you will also find yourself surrounded by a friendly atmosphere and a family that will help you progress and learn, not just beat you up like you’ll find in some gyms. Everyone there will gladly answer questions and help get you “started on the right foot”. BTW the new Slidell school is on Old Spanish Trail; they’re no longer at Fremaux. Their team/school affiliate name is now Gracie United and gracieonline.com is their new website. Check it out for locations and schedules for all the GU schools. Each school/gym cooperates with the others and instructors will often have classes with the other GU schools. This in my opinion is why GU BJJ students are so dominant in tourneys; you will never get stale because if you want to you can train in different places with different students and always be prepared to adapt to a situation.
