hiago Alves has decided enough is enough.

After hearing his cornerman call for a takedown late in his loss to Martin Kampmann, Alves has decided to bring in somone else to work his corner during fights.

Alves was defeating Martin Kampmann earlier this year when he heard to shoot in for a takedown against Kampmann. “The Hitman” locked in a choke and scored a submission victory with the clocking winding down in the final round.

“When you’re fighting, you’re in the zone,” said Alves, during a recent appearance on MMAJunkie Radio. “You just react to stuff, and my cornerman was like, ‘Takedown, takedown, takedown.’ I went for it and just made a mistake.”

Alves has decided to only work with the unnamed cornerman while training at American Top Team, electing to go a different direction come fight night. That decision was compounded when he heard the cornerman complain because he lost a bet when Kampmann defeated Alves.

“Maybe he wanted me to finish the fight in a safe position,” Alves said. “Maybe he wanted me to finish the fight on the ground so he could take credit for it. I don’t know, but I’m a striker; that’s what I do.”

The decision cost Alves a prime opportunity to move up the ladder in the stacked welterweight division, as Kampmann is now set to compete in a possible No. 1 contender match with Jake Ellenberger later this year. Alves is rumored to be scheduled to face Yoshihiro Akiyama in a bout that could see the loser get cut from the UFC.
