Triad Martial Arts Academy is a martial arts school specializing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Vale Tudo/MMA instruction located in Madison, Alabama. We offer a number of class times to meet the constraints of your schedule. If you’re interested in learning martial arts and self-defense, getting some good exercise, or just making some new friends, we invite you to drop by for a visit. We work hard to provide a positive, non-threatening, and open environment for learning one of the world’s most interesting and most effective martial arts.

Triad has two primary instructors, each with over 10 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Chuck Talley and Michael Brown represent two very different aspects of Jiu Jitsu, each having very different styles. They decided to start a school together a few years ago, hoping to guarantee that there will always be a good place to train in the Madison area.

Chuck has been training in martial arts since 1997. An ex-power lifter, Chuck shed about 75 pounds of muscle to improve his jiu-jitsu. Chuck is the first Triad Martial Arts student to be promoted to Black Belt, by Johnny Lee Smith and Carlos Machado. Chuck has trained with Carlos Machado, Rickson Gracie, Pedro Saurer, and many others. He is currently a firefighter with the Athens, Alabama Fire Department.

Mike has been training in the martial arts since 1988, and started with us in 1997. In spite of his complete lack of athletic ability (and due to a 3-year hiatus), he’s currently ranked as a purple belt. He left a career as an IT Consultant, traveling the country teaching software development, to come home and continue his martial arts training. Mike has also trained with many of the big names in jiu-jitsu, including Rickson Gracie and Carlos Machado. Mike is currently a software development professional with a local software company.

The founder of our parent school in Cullman, Johnny Lee Smith, will make trips to our location on occasion. In addition, many of the advanced belts at our location will make the trip to Cullman and train with him regularly. Johnny has been training in Jiu-Jitsu since 1992, and is recognized as a Black Belt by Hickson Gracie and Carlos Machado.
