Founded in 1984, Jung Su Martial Arts is one of the longest running and most successful programs in Northern Virginia. There are no long-term agreements to sign, no daycare or birthday parties offered and no guarantees that you will become a black belt. The school is a place where serious junior and senior students come to train hard and become lifetime martial artists.
Students who join the school typically stay with the program for 4-10 years. This long time participation is attributed to the fact that the program is always evolving and emphasis is placed on constant personal improvement. Every skill and rank attained is earned with work, discipline, sacrifice and perseverance. Our students gain a true sense of accomplishment and confidence by constantly challenging themselves.
Master Brian Costello, Founder, has been practicing martial arts for over 32 years. He started the school in 1984, teaching primarily Tang Soo Do and Jujitsu. As the school evolved, he began adding full contact fighting and reality based combat training to the curriculum. In the early 90’s he integrated these styles to form the Jung Su School of Martial Arts. Having trained in Tang Soo Do, Shotokan, Jujitsu and Kick Boxing, he continues to teach and learn alongside his students. Having instructed thousands of martial artists over the years, his personal philosophy is to work hard each time you step into the Dojang and strive for constant improvement. In addition to running the school, Master Costello is a licensed professional fight official for both Mixed Martial Arts and Boxing and serves as a special consultant to the state of VA for training professional MMA judges.
Joseph Bui serves as Jung Su’s Head Instructor and started with the school as a junior student in 1990. After 4 years of intense training, Joe was awarded his black belt in 1994. Joe continued to work hard and progress and in 1997, earned his 2nd degree black belt. In 2000, Joe became one of only three students in the school’s 25-year history to earn his 3rd degree black belt. Joe has been instrumental in helping expand the school. His dedication and own unique style serve as a role model for the rest of the students to follow. Joe is one of the founding members of the Jung Su Fight Team and is undefeated as an amateur Muay Thai fighter. Jung Su Martial Arts’ competition team participates in Kick Boxing, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts bouts on a local and national level. The team started in 2002 and has a combined record of 20 wins against only 5 losses.
