Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

This martial art originated in Brazil a several decades ago when two brothers by the names of Carlos and Helio Gracie were instructed in the art of Judo under the great Mitsuhiro Maeda (A.K.A. Conde Koma) who had come to Brazil in hopes of spreading his art. The brothers than took the given art and modified it in some aspects and improvised in others to create their own style known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as it is also known).

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that utilizes the grappling aspects of fighting and through correct positioning, leverage and applied technique, said practitioner could defend oneself and even subdue a much larger opponent. It was initially popularized in the United States by Royce, Rorion, Rickson and other members of the Gracie family through Royce’s participation and multiple victories in the early Ultimate Fighting Championship competitions and later in countless other events.

Muay Thai

The National Sport in Thailand, Muay Thai is a form of Kickboxing that was founded in its home nation and heavily practiced throughout the countries of southeast Asia. It has since over the centuries found a certain level of popularity across the World causing many promotions such as the IKF (International Kickboxing Federation), ISKA (International Sport Karate Association) and even K-1 (The Largest Kickboxing Organization in the world) to either integrate some of it’s techniques, or flat out offer combatants to compete under “Muay Thai Rules” matches. Such matches have been featured on ESPN and Fox Sports Net.

Coined as the “Art of Eight Limbs” Muay Thai differs from Traditional Kickboxing in that said practioners are not limited to merely striking with their fists (punching) and shins (kicking) but they are also able to utilize strikes using their knees and elbows as well. The Clinch is also encouraged in which the opponent is able to use both hands clasped behind the opponents head to secure and control them, utilitzing knees, elbows and close range punches.

Grappling

Grappling is a composite of multiple Martial Arts that involve takedowns, positioning, reversals, sweeps and submissions for opponents to subdue each other. Unlike Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Practitioners do not wear a Gi, but unlike Wrestling, pinning said opponents shoulders to the mat do not ensure victory. Grappling is more or less a combination of roughly every ground fighting Martial Art you can imagine. Striking is not allowed in this art, and actually it is encouraged most practitioners practice another art such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, some form of Wrestling, Judo, or any other art that focuses on a more specific aspect of Ground Fighting.

M.M.A. (Mixed Martial Arts)

Popularized in the United States by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (or UFC), Mixed Martial Arts is where a practioner uses a combination of Striking, Takedowns & Submissions or Ground Control to subdue their opponent in what would be considered the most “effective form of fighting”. Introduced to the U.S. in 1993 by the Gracie family through their inception of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, it was originally founded to determine which style of martial art was the most effective. Ulitmately, “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu” (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) won out with Royce Gracie winning 3 out of the first 4 tournaments. But as time continued, the game began to evolve, competitors who were primarily grapplers began to learn how to strike, strikers were learning how to grapple. Over time it has now become what is known a Mixed Martial Arts in that the competitors mix several styles to become true multi-dimensional competitors.

M.M.A. as it is known while not being present in the American eye until roughly 1993, had existed for some 60 years before in Brazil in events known as “Vale Tudo” (or Anything Goes). In these events, much like initially in the U.S., the Gracie family with their style of Jiu-Jitsu became the proverbial “Champions” of Brazil where they combated other schools and other styles such a Capoeira, Luta Livre, Muay Thai and even Judo. Now modern mixed martial arts sees techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling (All Forms), Judo & Sambo for dealing with the ground fight, and mixing it with Muay Thai, European Kickboxing, and Western Boxing to develop something of its own progressive style.

Capoeira

An Afro-Brazilian Martial Art that is as much an “Art” as it is a “Fighting Style”. Capoeira is a style that utilizes fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Most players either take turns in a number of activities that include Sparring or even singing or playing the necessary instruments to make the whole of Capoeira come together.

Much about the history of this Martial Art is not known other than it was brought to Brazil from Angola by the African slaves where it was developed further. It over time became much more of a dance as the slaves were banned from partaking in forms of martial arts and self defense. Therefore the slaves were forced to hide their art behind their “Dancing” and therefore Capoeira as we know it was born. It has since been spread and found a certain level of popularity the world over but still very much considers its home to be Brazil where it is still more heavily practiced.

Cardio-Kickboxing

More a form of developing aerobic conditioning than an actual Martial Art, Cardio Kickboxing utilizes a certain degree actual kcikboxing technique and set it at the pace that matches an aerobics workout to provide an interesting alternative to those who are bored with the standard “Aerobics Class”. It will also prove to get the student in great shape rather quickly.

Pilates

A method developed by Joseph Pilates of Germany that he believes uses the mind to control the muscles. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles. It has become quite popular in the U.S. over the last decade and not only helps to establish a stronger connection between the mind and the muscles, but those who have trained it have also stated that they have experienced and certain level of weight loss as well as much improved flexibility.

Strength & Conditioning

Taught by Jose, owner of Body Burn Fitness LLC. as well as our Strength & Conditioning Coach, the Strength & Conditioning class is one that looks to develop the body thorugh a combination of light weight training, primarily cardio based activities and exercises that utilize one to develop strength through control of ones bodyweight. It through this that one can develop their abilities condition their bodies merely for the purpose of losing weight and getting stronger, or to participate in future endeavors such as triathalons, or even one of the martial arrts that we offer here at Elite Fighting Academy. It is not uncommon to find many of the fighters and competitors in this class developing themselves alongside the members who are merely here just to drop those unwanted holiday pounds.

Elite Fighting Academy is now located at Orange County Fitness & Sports in the Downtown Orlando area!
