Universal Karate and Jiu-Jitsu Center in Miami, Florida, is home to Team Verdecia Hybrid Fighting Team. Headed by Ernest Verdecia, a Second Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo, Ernest has been studying Traditional and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1995, as well as a level two Commando Krav Maga instructor under the founder Moni Aizik, an ex-commando from the Israeli army. He has competed in several Shoot Fighting and Sport Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, winning a Gold medal in 1995 Pan-American Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Championships in the Masters Division. Ernest learned first hand the importance of grappling and learning ground game, by competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1995.

Since his loss to Oleg Taktarov, European & Asian Jiu-jitsu champion, during UFC V, Ernest has learned every aspect of the grappling game. He has combined the best of both worlds, striking with his Kenpo background & Jiu-jitsu with the grappling. He believes that all styles of martial arts have their individual & collective benefits. However, he also believes that all styles have their individual weaknesses. Dealing with these weaknesses increases reality in street combat.

As an example; Ernest has a black belt in American Kenpo Karate, which practices kicks & hand strikes as an art form. The kicking and striking (hands) are realistic (=benefit) while the forms, though traditional, are not realistic in street situations (=weakness). He’s not saying there is not a reason to practice the forms but that cross-training and sparring other styles is more important and (should carry more weight) when promoting (belts) to individuals. Cross-training helps a person to truly know his potential in the art he has chosen.Thank you for visiting our new Internet site.
