This is a fantastic well established gym. They have a great boxing program with Alex Manley. They are one of the few boxing gyms around that have an active team of fighters in multiple weight classes. The also have boxing classes for people just getting into the sport. If you have ever been interested in boxing and live around the Louisville area, call Coach Alex and come in and he will give you a training session. The gym also has a great atmosphere. You will probably make a bunch of new friends training there too.

I’ve blessed this gym. I watch over the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program… literally. Seriously though, I love my family at Derby City. I try to do everything there and their schedule is fantastic. The Coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and have people competing and winning in just about every combat sport. Besides having a great program, the gym looks great with a boxing ring, cage and plenty of mat space. And it’s affordable as I pay $69 a month. Couldn’t ask for a better gym.

Derby City is a great gym. Their gym has everything you need really, three black belts under Renato Tavares, brown belts that compete at a high level, two solid wrestling coaches, a USA Boxing registered coach who leads an amateur boxing team, and a solid MMA program with Professional fighters and a huge amateur team with a winning record. Being in the military I’ve had a chance to train at a lot of places and Derby City is top notch. CORE was a great place as well.

Hey big dick. I’m glad you have never trained at our gym before. Yes its true we do have a nice school. . . lots of mat space, cage, ring, bags, weights, etc. We don’t have much blood or guts lying around on the mats. That would be kind of unsanitary. The truth is this gym has been around since 2006 in the same location growing and growing. Longer than any other gym can say. Period. Our BJJ program consists of multiple black belts, brown belts, and we have more purple, blue and white belts than most gym have students. Our boxing program is doing incredibly well and has grown tremendously and is riddled with lots of very technical boxers and has a growing amateur program. We have college level wrestlers teaching wrestling. So. . . yea we do have a nice gym. Thanks for noticing!

As far as thinking that we are better than someone else, this is simply not the case. We just dislike many of the wrongful claims made by many upstart gyms(if you want to call them that). There is a reason why gyms like us CORE, REAL FIGHTERS, AMMMA, 4 Seasons are around. We have been training for a very long time. I have been training since 2003 in bjj and wrestled since I was 13. I think there is something very wrong when someone who is not qualified to teach people how to fight does so. This causes their students to get injured and does not allow the students to reach their true potential.

We do offer a free class, so come by and see what we are all about. If you have never been here before and base your opinion only on what you have heard from others then you should really check it out. Just come on in and make your assessment.

Best of luck to you brother.

I went into this gym after watching them destroy everyone they faced at an amateur show in Louisville. They seemed to have a great crowd and a great deal of supporters. It seemed like a great team environment. In hindsight it is a great team environment. The problem is, they play favorites and if you are not one of their long standing “team members” you get no love. If you are not one of their guys that competes and does really well, don’t expect the same level of instruction as the guys that do. The gym was very nice and they do have some very high quality instruction but it is not an environment that embodies the martial attitude. Most of the instructors that I met (I did not meet them all) seemed to have some sort of superiority complex. Just not a good vibe. I would definitely not recommend this gym unless you already know what you are doing because you will just be a paycheck to keep the gym pen for the guys who compete.

I train at DCMMA. Great place!! Very supportive of ALL members, not just the ones that compete. I’ve never been happier with my decision to join!

  • kenny says:

    Brian-
I don’t think you know what you are talking about, and obviously haven’t been to Derby City. I’m new to the gym and have felt nothing but support from every single person at the gym. None of the coaches have any kind of “superiority complex”. They are fantastic.

  • dconnelly says:

So the fighters get more instruction and attention than others? *GASP!* Of course they do. They’re supposed to. But to imply that because fighters get more attention means that others get substandard attention is fallacious at best.

Go to any gym and it’s the same. You can still learn a great deal but to ask to get the same amount of time as someone who competes regularly is just fucking stupid.

  • Hulk Haeberlin says:

I have nothing but good things to say about the gym. I have been to gyms in Florida and none of the gyms have had a better group of people to train with. I have learned more in a little time that I’ve trained at derby city and I have anywhere else. I strongly recommend coming to check out the gym it is a family friendly environment. the instructors are awesome, and joe’s fitness program is outstanding. It is a great place to go if you’re just trying to lose weight or if you’re trying to become a fighter or even just trying to get ready for competition of some kind. I have you had at least four friends sighn up already and they all love it because no 1 cares if you suck or if you’re good if you’re fat or old or about your religious beliefs you are always accepted for who you are. the more you train the better you get. this gym has changed my life I feel myself getting stronger and better everyday. I did high school wrestling and the wrestling practice at the gym is way better. they offer a free class come check it out you won’t regret it!

all i have to say is wow! this gym is incredible. i was so nervous to walk in because i was afraid the people were douchebags but i know now i was terribly wrong and very sorry. i walked in and was immediately greeted and treated like i was a part of their family. The guy allowed me to look around and then asked if i wanted a free trial session so i took the boxing and i never knew i was in that bad of shape because im always at another gym but they had me sweating bullets and it felt great!! when i was having trouble understanding something that everyone else knew the trainers took the time and walked over immediately giving me the help i needed to succeed in the drill they’re for sure focused on helping any and everyone. thanks guys!! i give this place two big thumbs up.

  • Stacy says:

As a woman it can be hard to walk in to a gym for the first time especially one that is a MMA gym whose members are mostly men, but ladies if you are looking to start or change your workout routine Derby City is worth that first step. As a member I can tell you it is a supportive environment with great coaches. I invite you to come try a class with me and a great group of women. You have nothing to lose but excess weight, stress, and frustration from daily life. Call the gym to set up a trial workout and I will meet you there.

  • J. F. says:

Well… they got rid of their ring and cage. I think they’re turning into a fitness center now. Plus they brought the kids over to the side where I take boxing and they’re very loud. I pay a high month to month fee because I didn’t want to get roped into a contract and I’m glad I didn’t.
