Columbia University Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club is dedicated to preserving a safe and friendly atmosphere. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that emphasizes grappling and groundfighting. It makes use of Judo throws, chokes, and jointlocks, as well as wrestling takedowns and techniques. It’s a lot of fun, great exercise, useful for self-defense, and it’s an awesome way to challenge yourself and learn new things! A positive attitude and willingness to learn are all that’s required to train with us! Beginners and women welcome.

CUBJJ instructor Jason Yang began training in 2000 when the Columbia club was only a few members who were lucky enough to be taught by Matt Serra. (Matt is now the UFC Welterweight Champion of the World).  Soon after, Jason began taking classes at Renzo Gracie Academy and took over teaching the Columbia club in 2002. Jason is now a black belt and also helps teach classes at the Academy. He has an impressive tournament record, including taking 3rd in the purple belt division at the 2005 Pan American Championships, 2nd at NAGA in 2005, and 1st in the advanced no-gi division at Grappler’s Quest in 2007.

CUBJJ meets in the Wrestling Room on the 2nd Floor at the Dodge Physical Fitness Center. All members must have a valid Dodge Fitness Center membership, sign a Columbia waiver and a CUBJJ Officer waiver, pay the class fee in full, and be added to the CUBJJ insurance roster (an additional $10 fee *may* apply).
