The Academy of Martial Studies in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is a dynamic Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB). Amongst our offerings is the Ultimate Reality Based Attack & Neutralization (U.R.B.A.N.) Military Combatives Program, dedicated to improving the combat-effectiveness of our nation’s most elite war fighters. We provide much more than just MMA training; as a Defense Contracting Company, we provide elite military courses for our service members as well. The Academy has its roots in fighting. It was created by world champion fighters who have trained in the martial arts all their lives and taught soldiers around the world. From Michael’s history of fighting in Afghanistan and many other areas of conflict with his service with the 7th Special Forces Group and other Government Agencies to our many other Instructors constantly teaching many of the same operators whose lives are on the line day in and day out, exposed to the inevitable and harsh realities of the real world.

Creating the Academy’s strong desire to cut through all of the fake and worthless systems being passed off as effective and bring something real to the real world. The Academy understands that the current methods and systems being taught to our Nation’s War Fighters are proving that they are completely ineffective when needed to survive in a life or death situation. The Academy was created to specifically address and correct this shortcoming. The development of the URBAN Combatives Program directly fights the system in ensuring that sport competition methods recently being taught to soldiers can be laid to rest instead or our war fighters. The common misconceptions about Sport Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or other competition or sport systems completely fail to address the relativities of the real world.

The Academy was formed to bring reality back to fighting and better prepare our War Fighters to survive and win the day. The Academy provides realistic, dynamic, and adaptive military combatives training at client sites worldwide, at our Academy locations, and at the sites of our teaming partners. Our facilities include our newest training facility in Fayetteville located near the Yadkin Gate Entrance to Fort Bragg. We have also joined forces with The Carlson Gracie Federation and many UFC legends like Dan “The Beast” Severn who visit and teach at The Academy often. Carolina Fight Magazine has named us the Number 1 Ammateur MMA Gym in the Nation. Our fight team, The Academy Warriors, have been stomping competition in the cage and major events like NAGA Championships.

If you’re looking for quality training this is most definately the place to go to. The instructors are nothing but devoted to what they do!

  • sapper says:

The knowledge level and skill of the staff are “scary” in the best way. You don’t even realize how much you are learning before you are executing the moves. I would put them up against anyone as fighters and/or instructors.

This gym is definitely a place to learn how to defend yourself. Students are all nice, and the teachers are friendly, very knowledgable and willing to go the extra mile for their students. I recommend this gym to everyone I know.

I am an Academy Fighter and have trained at other places: No other place makes you feel more like family or like a team than the Academy. Could not ask for a better team to coach and mentor me in my fight game!!!!!

In my 17 years training in various styles throughout the united states and japan, I can attest to this gym. They dont just sit on there ass and walk around in a GI shouting and making corretions to there students. It is a place you where you learn to actually fight, survive and train your ass off to be become your best. And their instructors will take the necessary time with you one on one to make sure you grasp the material.

If you want to learn how to fight, survive and become your best physically and mentally check out URBAN. Don’t settle for less. That is, of course, if you want the real stuff…If you’re comfortable learning from some fat instructor who can barely maintain his belt size and has the nerve to preach discipline then happy training…

    Sincerist regards…

This place is the best MMA gym I have been to in a long time. the training is hard but very applicable to the real world. The instruction is relevant and easy to understand.

As a former Marine who cares about deploying American troops, I am thrilled that there is finally a place that teaches deploying Marines, Soldiers, Airman, Squids, and civilians of all body types and experience levels the psychology of having to be an aggressor and a toolkit of real techniques for accomplishing these objectives. I have seen many students living in the local area encounter break-ins and attempted rapes that have required them to fight after a short period at the Academy, and they have survived and fended off their attackers. I also have 3 children who have attended the school for 2 years, and they teach non-lethal martial arts skills that work to build the children’s confidence and ability.
