ACADEMY SOMA is located inside Oxford Martial Arts and Fitness in Oxford, Ohio. Academy Soma is a school dedicated to the instruction of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Soma is Greek for “Body”. The Academy’s purpose is to help individuals become more aware of their own bodies through the practice of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which is one of the most effective and fastest growing martial arts studied in the world. Jiu-Jitsu means “Gentle or Soft Technique.” Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art designed for a smaller person to use leverage in order to survive against a much more aggressive and bigger opponent.

Matt Strack is the head Instructor of Academy Soma. Matt is a certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Master Pedro Sauer. Matt began his journey in Gracie Jiu Jitsu in 1997 with Jeff Curran (www.teamcurran.com) in Chicago, IL. After being introduced to Jeff’s instructor, Pedro Sauer (www.pedrosauer.com), Matt moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to study exclusively with Master Sauer. After 9 years of training, Matt Strack received his Black Belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu from Master Pedro Sauer.

Matt is one of a very small group of individuals to receive his Black Belt while under direct instruction from Master Sauer in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2008, Matt returned to Illinois and took a full time position as the head Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor for Jeff Curran at Curran Martial Arts in Crystal Lake, IL. Matt was responsible for the training of students interested in the techniques used in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. In May of 2009, Matt relocated to Oxford, Ohio to be closer to family. Matt started the Academy Soma to share the knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu that he has gained over the past 12 years.
