Come to American Martial Arts Institute/DrumJitsu, located in Mesquite, Texas, and train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) with Jeff Hennen. Jeff personally teaches the classes at the academy. Jeff’s Academy is a 4,000 + square foot training center, complete dressing facilities for men and women.

AMAI Jiu-Jitsu classes are divided into three types of instruction providing the student with a fully rounded BJJ education.

The 1st week of every month is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). MMA helps you deal with real self-defense. Situations such as punches and kicks and even weapons. We wear gloves and protective gear at all times. That way we can practice defending ourselves against a real attack or street fight. What good is it to learn BJJ if you can’t defend yourself in a real fight. MMA classes are a lot of fun and a great confidence builder. Self Defense techniques (bear hugs/headlocks/hair pulling) are taught throughout the month. Most people get into martial arts for self defense What good is it to be a good grappler if you can’t get them to the ground because you can’t deal with a surprise attach or hold. Therefore self-defense teaching must be learned and understood. Helio Gracie insists on it. You can’t argue with that!

The majority of the time (the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the month) the Gi (Kimono) is worn. This way the student becomes familiar with BJJ in its most basic and traditional form. The Gi makes you more technical and builds great defense. The Gi offers a greater variety of holds, submissions, and options for sweeps utilizing the grips on the fabric. Training with the Gi gives you the ability to control and submit your opponent utilizing many different and wonderfully clever chokes that only traditional BJJ teaches. It’s a must!

The last week of every month is when the Gi is shed and only shorts and shirts are worn. This is called Submission Grappling. Submission grappling is sweeping the world because it brings together competitors from all styles (wrestling, sambo, judo, etc,) It’s a game that anyone can play. It’s a much faster game, because there are not as many grips and handles on your opponent. There are a lot fewer chokes and submissions. It’s a different skill than competition style jiu-jitsu, but it’s a lot of fun.

Hopefully you can see AMAI offers a well rounded program. It’s a great place with great people and great instruction. Don’t take our word for it. Drumjitsu welcomes all individuals of all levels from beginner to advanced, and both men and women. Come take a free class and see for yourself, or call us for a lesson today!
