ABJJ is a great MMA school that provides the best in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA training in Anchorage, Alaska. The school has top notch instructors and a variety of class times that offer both beginner and advanced classes in each discipline. Their competitive teams have won medals in the Pan American Games as well as their fight team has been featured in the UFC and other top circuits in the United States as well as Canada. If you are looking for a school to push you physically as well as provide a great foundation for your technique I would recommend the Anchorage Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio.

I’ll be unbiased here….. I have trained at Gracie Barra locally, and have trained at other schools outside of Alaska… With that said, I can honestly say that ABJJ is a school that pushes you to excellence and hard. The curriculum is straight-forward and one great thing in terms of areas of concentration that is often overlooked is you learn roughly 2-3 techniques a week and drill it for that week. That kind of style builds fundamentals and muscle memory.

Also, I applaud the “old school” approach to earning a belt – the belt test, which you are tested against all your peers. I may not be as consistent as before in terms of attendance, but I can say that as a white belt, training under Justin, Todd, Ryder, & Kevin, I have either taken or hung with blue and purple belts outside of Alaska. Other than that, I have two words: GET SOME.

I’ve been training at this gym since just after its inception and bared witnessed to a room full of white belts struggling to elbow escape across the mat. The skill level from then to now is like night and day. The amount of legitimate colored belts has grown drastically creating a very competitive atmosphere throughout the gym.

I believe that this, along with the success had by the competitors and a national level is a direct result of the instructors and the hard work of the students. That being said, there is a fine line between Jiu- Jitsu and MMA and this is a Jiu- Jitsu based gym.

During Jiu- Jitsu classes, mat space has become limited, at best. As for MMA, only two sparring matches (four people) can happen simutaneously. Also, there are no bags in the gym, which if there were, could raise the striking level of the MMA competitors substantially. Even with the primitive facilities, still the best place in the state to learn how to whip that proverbial ASS. Finally, Jiu- Jitsu promotions shouldn’t be based on attendance as much as skill level and performance.

I am the instructor at Frontier Vale Tudo MMA and by far ABJJ is the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Alaska! I highly recommend it.

The gym has recently moved to its current location. When the remodel is complete the gym will provide over 2000+ square feet of mat space, viewing bleachers, a full AFC cage, a heavy bag area, and a complete line of MMA and BJJ supplies to include the renowned Merciless gear. All in all it is the best training facility in the state.

  • Owlie says:

ABJJ is a great place to train. The new facility is fantastic- complete with a cage and changing rooms. The instruction is very technical and focused- Justin sets a curriculum each week and builds on a basic set of 3-4 techniques over the week.

Also, this is a great place for ladies who might be interested in BJJ or MMA. The instructors are just as demanding of and respectful to the women as they are for the men. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.
