10th Planet Jiu Jitsu was created by Eddie Bravo under the tutelage of Jean Jacques Machado. It is a unique style of no gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which was made to work both inside the cage and on the sporting mats.  The intentionality behind the creation was to have an unorthodox style which could keep an opponent under constant control and in the threat of danger.  The 10th Planet system was put to the test in Abu Dhabi 2003, and it succeeded masterfully by facilitating Eddie Bravo’s victory over long time reigning champion Royler Gracie. Immediately following that victory, Eddie opened his own school to further the system.

John Botello is the Chief Instructor of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Phoenix. John started training Jiu-Jitsu while in the U.S. Navy under Relson Gracie in 1999 while in Hawaii. After training with Relson for a year, John then moved to San Diego, and then Los Angeles to train with Rickson Gracie. John also trained with Rickson Gracie black belt Fabio Santos from whom John received his blue belt. John was told about Eddie Bravo by a friend of his and decided to try out his class while in L.A. After one class John was hooked, and decided to give up training in the the Gi and started training at 10th Planet Hollywood. John is certified to teach the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system by Eddie Bravo and currently holds the rank of purple belt.

Eddie Bravo, is the creator of our unique system of Jiu-Jitsu. Instead of waiting for submissions to happen, we force them to happen. Instead of the traditional type of Jiu-Jitsu that allows your opponent to posture up and rain down punches or elbows, we work on the ground in the clinch forcing our opponents into disadvantageous positions and down a path that forces them into making mistakes and getting caught in one of our many unorthodox submissions.

If you have never done Jiu-Jitsu before, John will show you step by step what to do in each position and the other more experienced students are more than willing to help as well. We are a No-Gi school, which means we don’t train in the traditional Kimono / Judo type Gi. Our unique system of Jiu-Jitsu works great for No-Gi grappling, or MMA. Jiu-Jitsu is also great if you just want a different kind of work out.

I’ve been training @ 10th Planet JJ Phoenix for a year, and I have to say in all my years of BJJ training I’ve never been to a school that’s so clean and welcoming. There’s 2 mat areas, one of them has 2,400 square feet and the other is 2,200 square feet. Plenty of space, so don’t be concerned about crowding. John keeps the classes competitive, yet ego free. He also rolls with his students every night, which you really don’t see to often these days in JJ schools. His teaching style is great, breaking down each movement step by step. If you haven’t tried a class here come on in. In my opinion 10th Planet JJ Phoenix is the best kept secret in the valley 🙂

Oh, and John is a brown belt, not a purple anymore
