Universal Kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu, located in Phoenix, Arizona, is a program that promotes safe and healthy lifestyles through the sport of kickboxing while building strong and responsible character in each student. Universal Kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu is Freestyle Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for fitness, sport and competition. After the fundamentals are developed such as stance, footwork, guards, basic punches and kicks, then the program chosen will determine the next techniques learned, and training routine for that student.

After the fundamentals are learned, students will then begin to accomplish additional skills such spinning kicks, spinning punches, jumping techniques, sweeps, takedowns and transitioning from stand up striking to ground protection. Universal Kickboxing provides a “pressure free” environment that welcomes everyone to learn. Meaning that, “your ego is left at the door” and everyone is treated as a an equal when initially joining, until the Coach determines your appropriate placement based on your experience. This way, beginners can feel welcome and learn comfortably without feeling the need to “keep up” with the more experienced students.

Coach Brooks, also referred to as Sensei Brooks, began as a traditional martial artist earning his black belt in karate then later earning his black belt in freestyle kickboxing. Coach Brooks is also experienced in jujitsu, grappling, boxing and Muay Thai kickboxing. Coach Brooks is also a successful competitor from 35 marital competitions from karate, jujitsu and kickboxing.   He believes “we are always a student”, regardless of achievements. Meaning the mind should always be open and ready to learn more. Coach Brooks continues to seek mentorship and knowledge from successful martial arts masters of the Korean arts, Japanese arts, Thai arts, Asian healing arts and boxing professionals to continue to provide the best possible teachings and sharing of knowledge to his students with Universal Kickboxing.

The first thing I noticed when I joined Team Universal was the sense of “family” that seemed to be lacking from some of the other gyms I visited. Coach Brooks deeply cares about us as students, pushing us to work harder and learn more with each class or lesson and enabling us to reach our goals. As for the training, the cardio work-out with each class is certainly intense, yet there is still plenty of focus put forth on learning new techniques in the ring. Whether working with the bags or pads, or sparring with someone in the ring, I have learned a great deal with respect to kickboxing techniques, as well as what my goals are and what motivates me to reach those goals, at team Universal.
