King’s Boxing Gym in Oakland, California, has one boxing ring, several speed bags and various weight machines. Those using the gym are able to get a complete cardio workout. The gym is equipped with two men locker rooms and one woman’s locker room with a shower room. Lockers are free and available on a first come first serve basis. The boxers need to provide a combination lock for their locker and Mr. Charles King will assign them a locker.

Head Trainer Charles King started training boxers in 1984 at his first gym located at East 14th Street in Oakland. King’s Gym remained at that location until 1989, when the gym moved to its present location in 1990 and has been home to many boxing enthusiasts. Charles has trained two California state champions: Diallo Lawson and James Long. He has also trained with pro fighters Brian Sneed and Bruce Hightower and many amateurs.

King’s Gym has been used for press conferences for Andre Ward and James Toney’s fights. Some professionals who have frequented the gym are George Foreman, Bone Crusher Smith, Joe Frazier and son Marvin Frazier, Pernell Whitaker, James Page, Julio Chevez and James Toney. Other notables who have experienced a work out at King’s Gym are singers Lenny Williams and Bob Dylan.
