Look toward the ring and you will most likely see people of all ages either engaged in a sparring match or in 15 to 20 minute shadowboxing routines. And at the edge of the ring keeping a constant visual over his pupils, barking out instructions, standing like a general watching his troops prepare for battle will be Mayfield Pennington.

Mayfield Pennington was born in the small city of Pikeville, Ky, in 1950. Mayfield is best known for his victories over former US Olympian Sugar Ray Seals and former Middle Weight Champion of the World Emile Griffith. With a professional record of 48-16, Mayfield was a great boxer, trained by the legendary Bud Bruner of Louisville, Ky. Bruner is best known as being the first professional trainer of “the Greatest” Muhammad Ali. Mayfield also had the opportunity to train alongside Ali.
Now Mayfield has returned to Pikeville to pass on his vast knowledge of the sport of boxing to a whole new generation. He hopes to give kids something better to do with their time other than drugs and crime. Mayfield is very outspoken on his standpoint when it comes to drugs. He will be the first to tell you that if you’re out drinking and doing drugs, you need to stop it. “Stop with all the drugs and come to the gym and learn from me how to be a boxer.”
