NYMAG (New York Martial Arts Gym) is Duchess County’s First Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy and this area’s only school to produce fighters and champions at the Highest Level of competition in both Grappling and MMA.  In addition to recreational practitioners who enjoy the benefits of fitness and self defense, fighters who have trained at NYMAG and have been coached by our instructors have gone on to claim victories at the Highest Levels of MMA and Grappling Competition in reputable & established venues such as the UFC, Pride, King of the Cage, the Pan American Games & World Championships.

NYMAG provides a diverse learning environment and has this area’s strongest working relationship with local law enforcement and military personnel.  Our reputation for producing real results for real life professionals is well established and unsurpassed.

The NYMAG Academy was founded in 1997 by Jiu-jitsu Expert, Gene Simco.  It began as “New York Martial Arts Gym”, where Gene ran a Classical Jiu-jitsu program for his first teacher of the art.  He also hosted a Jeet Kune Do Program, Boxing, Arnis and Karate classes, brining together instructors from the area to create Dutchess County’s first true Mixed Martial Arts Academy.  The diversity of training was the foundation on which NYMAG was built and a tradition that would continue throughout its existence.

The School flourished and grew to include Ninjitsu, Aikido and Kickboxing classes. During this time, Gene broadened his own experience not only by training in many of the programs taught there personally, but in continuing his Jiu-jitsu training to include the Gracie style of Jiu-jitsu, hosting several Champions of the art including Renzo Gracie, Ricardo Almeida, Sean! Alvarez, Edson Carvalho, Marcio Simas, Michael Jen, Marcelo Nigue and several Instructors from Brazil, some of whom taught weekly classes.  This diversity of styles within a style gave him and his students a broader picture of Jiu-jitsu and made the program complete.

After ten years of training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Gene would eventually earn a Black Belt in that style as well and become recognized internationally as one of the foremost authorities on the art through his books and personal instruction. The NYMAG Academy gained a reputation for excellence as students from all walks of life benefited from the education obtained here. Mr. Simco continues to act as the program director for NYMAG and Head BJJ instructor.

At NYMAG, students come to us for many reasons.  Over the years, we have helped military and law enforcement personnel stay safe on the job, recreational practitioners have fun, individuals looking for self improvement or self defense reach their goals and those who chose to compete have illustrated the effectiveness of the Jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts techniques taught here.

Through the years, the NYMAG Academy has hosted many Black Belt instructors; from Gracie Family members to World Champions, giving our program a complete picture of the art. Where some schools focus on only one aspect or style of Brazilian or Traditional Jiu-jitsu training, we have extensive experience training top sport players, mma fighters, military personnel, law enforcement officers and recreational practitioners.

NYMAG is an Accredited Black Belt BJJ Academy; this is important to our students because they know their instructor is dedicated, experienced, certified to teach and technically sound. For those who wish to grade, having a Black Belt on hand during daily practice also allows students to obtain rank legitimately, realistically and fairly.

In addition to being an Accredited Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy, NYMAG is a member of the Special Operations Combative Arts Association and The American Kickboxing Federation. So whether your goal is sport, mixed martial arts, self defense, recreation or all of the above, we have the integrated martial arts experience to prepare you like no one else can.

Our Principal Instructor, Gene Simco has been certified by several Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Associations and trained with many different top instructors on both coasts of the US and in Brazil. He holds Black Belts in both Brazilian and Classical Jiu-jitsu; this diversity has helped create a full palate for our students to choose from; in this way, you’ll never be caught off guard or left with unanswered questions.

Mr. Simco is highly respected as one of the foremost authorities on Jiu-jitsu in the World and is America’s Leading Author on the subject; this, along with his diverse experience at so many Jiu-jitsu schools makes him one of the most sought after American Instructors of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu teaching in the United States.

He personally teaches Group Jiu-jitsu & MMA Classes and is available for Personal Training, which will accelerate your growth. Many of our clients are either busy career people who can not attend at the scheduled Group Class times or professionals who have a need for privacy and/or accelerated learning.

The address listed is incorrect. NYMAG has three locations in Newburgh, Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls. Great people to train with – World and Pan Am champs in BJJ and a handful of new striking instructors.

They have a new location now in Wappingers on Rt 9 near Fishkill opening December 2009. The space is huge and is the only complete MMA facility in the area with cage, showers, bags, etc … NYMAG just got better! I train there and its great. The people are awesome, friendly and the training is top notch.

New York Martial Arts Gym has a very impressive website with lots of impressive endorsements. However, the New Windsor, NY facility is not nearly as impressive. It is sparsely equipped with only a wall-to-wall mat for training and exercising and a small, and I mean very small, waiting area for parents of kids and teens to wait while our kids train. If you are thinking about enrolling your kids or teens who might change their minds about martial arts training or if you may have to cancel your enrollment quickly or unexpectedly and you’re looking for a quick and easy cancellation policy, this is NOT the place for you. My kids decided after the second session that they no longer wanted to participate. The policy required that I submit my cancellation request in writing, return receipt requested, a full 30 days in advance before my billing stopped so you too might get stuck with a month or more of charges after you or your kids have stopped using the gym. And if you think that you can talk the management out of this requirement, you are sadly mistaken. I tried. All they did was regurgitate the policy back to me. Good luck and think long and hard before enrolling at this mixed martial arts gym.
