BEWARE! 6 or 12 months memberships only my child did not even have a chance to see if he liked it! 1 guest day that’s it, and you have to sign up. my son went for 2 months and we have been charged for 7 months @ 110 a month. Stay away from this place! this should not be a child’s academy. this is a rip off go to a school with month to month if you are signing up your child

My family and I love SSMAA! Our shy 6-year old is quickly coming out of her shell and making wonderful friends in her Muay Thai classes. At the same time, my wife enjoys every opportunity to practice her Triangle chokes on me in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! 😉 Sifu Shields and Ashley Nee are wonderful instructors with a wealth of knowledge! We love our ‘family-time’!!

Scott Shields Martial Arts offers training in a variety of martial arts styles. The material is often integrated to show how different styles would handle a given situation (attack, evasion, etc.). There are also frequent seminars on practical self defense methods, for both unarmed and armed (gun, knife) situations. There are classes for both adults and children, which the kids really seem to enjoy (I wish I still had that much energy). I have been a student at SSMA for 3 years, and I would recommend this school to anyone looking for self defense training.

I highly recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn a martial art in a safe and friendly envorinment. They greet you with open arms and treat everyone like family. Ashley Nee is wonderful with the kids! They beg to go to class instead of wanting to stay home! I have been to a few schools over the years and I wish i would have found them years ago!

I am so happy at SSMAA. I have been there for several years and the amount of knowledge I have gained is incredible. Master Shields teaches the best techniques for self-defense and also for sport. He is a fantastic teacher. The other instructors are helpful and knowledgeable and so are the students. My child loves the kids classes, too. Everyone there is so friendly and it is a great family atmosphere.

I love training with Master Scott Shields! Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy is so fantastic. I have become confident through the Jiu-Jitsu and JKD classes that I can defend myself and I love taking the Thai boxing, it is such a great way to get in shape! Master Shields has so many techniques that I feel every woman NEEDS to know to defend herself and he knows exactly what to teach you to use against a bigger, stronger opponent. There is a real sense of family there and the other girls are great, we are even starting a girls club of sorts where we get together and just workout one Friday a month. I just feel such a part of this place, I love my training! Go Team Jaguar! 🙂

  • Scott Shields martial arts academy is the BEST place to train in the Charlotte area! I have been a student for about 9 months now and still love it! All the other students are very nice and always helpful. The instructors are all highly qualified and are there to correct every detail to help me learn all the move right. I have lost weight and am getting in much better shape. The family enviorment is very nice. I felt at home from the very moment I walked in. Master Scott Shields is an incredible instructor with so much knowledge and skills it blows my mind. I have trained for many years in tradtional arts and know a true master when I see one. He takes his time to work, spar and train with all his students and is patient the entire time. Always smiling and is so friendly. I rave about this place and wish I would have found it years ago! I have been training with Sifu Shields for a year now, in a variety of styles and can’t imagine training anywhere else. It is a great atmosphere for adults and children. Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy will always be the place I choose to train. Master Shields is a wonderful instructor. As a college professor myself I have seen terrible instructors as well as incredible ones in martial arts and in the world of higher ed. and Sifu Shields is simply one of the best. He has a way of teaching to everyone at every level, and getting his point across in fun and educational ways. I would recommend his school to anyone, and do anything for any of the people attend his classes. I am proud to call them my martial arts family.

was a bouncer years ago and man, do I wish I knew then what I know now. Master Scott Shields combines his real life experience in self-defense situations and sport to teach his students techniques that work for a variety of encounters. Whether it is knife defenses, 3rd party intervention or a sweep for a tournament you can learn it all here. Master Shields combines effective moves from many different arts to create a realistic and useful curriculum in his classes. The students are great and there is always someone there to give you a little extra help with a technique or encouragement if you need it. I think I can speak for the school as a whole when I say Master Shields students are very confident in their ability to defend themselves if need be. Through it all, Master Shields is a humble, ego-less instructor and always an open book and with an open door to discuss any topic you might have a question on. If you are looking to train martial arts, whether for self-defense, fitness, confidence or sport, I encourage you without hesitation to try out a class and join our Team!

Scott Shiels is a Fraud. He claims to be a BJJ black belt under Marcus Renato who doesnt exist. This man is a con artist and a disgrace to Martial Arts.

Research this guy before you sign anything

  • Marti Meyers says:

Like Dave said, do your research before giving over your money. He claims credentials that he hasn’t earned. I wouldn’t want my kids learning anything from a liar with no integrity. Any belts he gives out mean nothing, because they come from a fraud. Google his name. You can choose an instructor who you can be proud to be a student of, but this guy is not it.

  • Leanna says:

I am so glad to have found this school. Scott Shields is an amazing brazilian jiujitsu black belt and his skills in teaching the material to all people of regardless of previous skill, age or physical limitations. I would suggest this place to anyone who wants real self-defense with BJJ or weapons training. Everyone is so friendly and professional at all times. The place is very clean and a great place for the family! No matter weather you are wanting Jeet Kune Do (JKD), Thai Kickboxing, Jiu-jitsu or the art of Kali, you won’t be dissappointed. Try a free class and see what you think. I couldn’t be happier with my training. I have lost 25 pounds and feel 10 years younger.

  • Jake Doyle says:

Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy is an awesome place to train. I always have a fun time in class and learn some great stuff and I also get a nice workout. I have also made a ton of friends there and love the team/family atmosphere. They are always having activities on weekends and special seminars and stuff that just add to the overall great experience of being a student there. If you want a place to train in the Charlotte, NC area you should definately join Team Jaguar!

  • Tate Lansing says:

Scott Shields Martial Arts is the best place I have ever found to train. I had trained in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) for over 5 years before I moved to Charlotte and found Sifu Shields. His classes are always fun and exciting and extremely practical. I love the mixture of self-defense and sport material. My two children are having a fantastic time in the kids classes there and my wife has just started in the Muay Thai kickboxing class as well and is feeling great about losing weight and getting in better shape and making new friends. They have an amazing atmosphere for all ages and everyone is treated like family. I cannot reccommend this school enough, whether you are a brand new beginner or have lots of experience, if you want the best place in the Charlotte area to train come to Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy.

Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy is a godsend! I cannot say enough good things about the instructors. They are knowledgeable and fun and really care about getting you good. A family and team atmosphere permeate the whole school. Not only the instructors but the students go out of their way to make sure you are having a good time and getting the moves correctly. I have been taking their Muay Thai Kickboxing class for 3 months and have lost 20 lbs and toned up! It is such a fun and awesome work out! My kids are in the children’s class and they LOVE it! They can’t wait to come to class on Tues and Thurs! I love watching them lean self-defense but more so about respect, self-discipline and teamwork. The kids really are an amazing team, no one ever gets left out or bullied and they show amazing sportsmanship. My children love being on Team Jaguar and so do I!

  • Bruce Bowie says:

Scott Shields Martial Arts is simply the best in the business. I have been training in Jeet Kune Do for about 5 years now. For the first few years I tried several different schools and took lots of seminars. I hated floating around but I just could not find a good teacher and a school with a very comfortable atmosphere. Finally I found Sifu Scott Shields. Not only is he a WORLD CLASS instructor, his academy is an amazing place that his students can really call home! Sifu Shields is a second generation student of Bruce Lee, having gotten his instructor rank from Bruce Lee’s protégé Dan Inosanto, so it is very cool to be so close to the source of Jeet Kune Do, you can’t really get much closer than that! He really explains the material well and makes sure his students understand it. If you are having a hard time with something he will personally work with you to make sure you get. All of the instructors under him are very knowledgeable, professional and helpful and the cool thing is that the other students even go out of the way to help you as well! Everyone goes out of their way to welcome new students so you don’t have to feel worried or anxious, you will not be out of place your first time. We are a big family and a great team that works together and always helps each other. Go Team Jaguar! I recommend Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy to everyone, children and adults alike. There are classes for whatever you are interested in, JKD (Jeet Kune Do), Kali/Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu and kids classes I think are MMA but I don’t have kids so I am not sure. I love the Jeet Kune Do because of the philosophy but it doesn’t matter what art you take, I have watched other classes and Sifu’s teaching skill is so high it is amazing. Everyone has fun and gets good. I can’t say enough good things about the school and I am so grateful to have ended up at Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy and as a member of Team Jaguar!!!
